St. Petersburg is located within Pinellas County, Florida and has an estimated population of approximately 250,000.  Given its population, St. Petersburg is the fourth largest city in Florida.  The city has a nickanme of the "the sunshine city" but when you are confronted by the police there is definately not any sunshine.  The St. Pete police has 540 sworn officers and 234 civilian support staff and is the largest municipal police department in Pinellas County.  The St. Petersburg police has a very proactive police department and issue thousands of tickets a year.  In calendar year 2007, Pinellas County law enforcement agencies made almost 3,700 DUI arrests.  St. Pete police made 529 DUI arrests, and issued over 7000 criminal citations. 

Aside from the criminal citations issued in 2007, the St. Petersburg Police issued almost 23,000 infractions to motorists.  Almost one-third of those tickets were for unlawful speed.  The St. Pete police department uses radar, laser and undercover vehicles to enforce Florida traffic laws.  St. Pete police also assist the Pinellas County Sheriffs office with traffic enforcement.
