Clay County Florida is located in the greater Jacksonville area. The estimated population is 140,000 and is considered part of the Jacksonville metropolian area. It is known for its warm mineral springs and has been a popular vacation spot for northeners for over a hundred years.
The county seat is Green Cove Springs. The main law enforcement agency is the Clay County Sherffs office. However, some of the small municipalites have small police departments. They include Green Cove, Middleburg and Orange Park. The Florida Highway Patrol wrote almost 1,800 speeding citations in 2007 to motorists in Clay County. Aside from speeding tickets, which totaled over 13,000 in 2007, law enforcement arrested over 500 people for driving under the influence or DUI.
Because of the nature of the area, almost 2,000 were either arrested or cited for driving while license suspended or no valid driver's license. The sheriffs department is often involved in proactice red light enforcement. The sheriffs office issues almost 1,700 citations for running a red light.
