Bradford County is located in northern Florida not too far south of the Georgia state line. Bradford counties known for housing some of the most dangerous individuals in Florida State Prison. The prison opened in 1961 and today houses almost 1,5000 prisoners. Infamous for housing one of three death row cell blocks, Florida State Prison was home to the infamous old sparky. Old Sparky was an electrocution chair that became famous because it reportedly caused flames to shoot out of the heads of the person being subjected to death. It was officially retired in 2000 and replaced with lethal injection.
The county seat is Starke, a city infamous for its speedtraps. Along with Waldo, and Lawtey, the city of Starke has been listed as a speedtrap by the American Automobile Association. The association warns drivers to avoid the city by not taking highway 301.
Other cities in Bradford County include Brooker and Hampton. The Florida Highway Patrol and the Bradford County sheriffs office are the two main law enforcement agencies in the county. They issue tickets for unlawful speed, red lights, driving while license suspended, no valid driver's license, and driving under the influence (DUI).
Part of the 8th Judicial Circuit, the main courthouse for the county is located at 945 North Temple Avenue in Starke, Florida 32091.
